Mt Xia Standards

In order to enable an enterprise wide mentality of business continuity, the following parameters should always be configured using Enterprise Wide Unique (EWU) values:

  • Computer Naming Standards for every AIX system:
    • Managed System Names (1 per Frame)
    • Logical Partition Names (1 per LPAR)
    • Partition Profile Names (1 per LPAR)
    • Node Names (1 per LPAR)
    • DNS Host Names (multiple per LPAR)
    • DNS Aliases to Host Names for user/application access (multiple per LPAR) (based on RG name)

  • TCP/IP Network Addressing Standards:
    • Boot Address (1 per network adapter, each on a separate non-routed subnet)
    • Persistent Address (1 per LPAR)
    • Node Address (1 per LPAR)
    • Resource Group Address (1 per Resource Group)
    • Standby Address (1 per non-active network adapter) (configuration dependent)

  • Users and Groups:
    • Every user has an EWU login name, no shared logins
    • Every user has an EWU UID number
    • Each group has EWU group Name and GID
    • Login naming standards (compatible with Unix, Win, AS/400, RACF, etc.)
    • Application administrator login (RG based, 1 per RG)

  • Resource Group (RG) Naming Standards:
    • 8 characters, alpha-numeric
    • Used with Standalone, Manual Fail-Over, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery Systems
    • Application Start/Stop Scripts
    • DNS Aliases to Host Names
    • Storage Naming Standards
    • VIO Server VTD Naming Standards
    • Workload Manager Naming Standards
    • Partition Load Manager Group Naming Standards
    • Build once, run anywhere mentality

  • Application Start/Stop Scripts Naming Standard:
    • /usr/local/scripts/<ResourceGroupName>_appl##_start.sh
    • /usr/local/scripts/<ResourceGroupName>_appl##_stop.sh
    • Assigns Workload Manager TAG to each application based on RG name and application

  • DNS Alias Name Standards:
    • A DNS Alias is configured using the RG name to point to a host name for user and application access (RG Based)
    • Users and applications should only access a business function using a DNS alias (not a Host Name)
    • This allows quick redirection of users and applications if a system or data center goes down by simply changing the DNS alias

  • Storage Naming Standards (LVM):
    • All AIX systems including standalone, manual fail-over, high availability, and disaster recovery systems
    • Volume Group Names (based on RG Name)
    • Volume Group Names (based on RG Name)
    • Logical Volume Names (based on RG Name)
    • Log Logical Volume Names (based on RG Name)
    • File System Mount Point Directories (based on RG Name)

  • WorkLoad Manager Naming Standards (WLM):
    • Class Names (based on RG Name)
    • Subclass Names (based on application TAGs)
    • WLM TAG values (TBD)

  • Partition Load Manager Configuration Standards (PLM):
    • Groups (RG Based?)
    • global settings / tunables
    • group settings / tunables
    • node settings / tunables


In order to enable an enterprise wide mentality of business continuity, the following parameters should always be configured using Frame or Cluster Wide Unique (FWU or CWU) values, whichever is the largest valid scenario:

  • Virtual Adapter Slot numbering
    • Standardized VSCSI Adapter Slots
    • Standardized VETH Adapter Slots
    • VIOS identification (even/odd)
    • VIOS VTD names (RG based)
    • client LPARs
